What to do
Winter has fewer plans in it, which suits a slow visit. Walk through the village and see the lanes in cold light; our village guide will help you find your way around. Bring a camera. In Homes 2, 3 and 4, spend an evening by the fireplace. If the weather allows, the Prespa lakes are about 7 km away, but check conditions before you set off.
Winter on the lakes
Winter is also the season of the lake birds. The Society for the Protection of Prespa reports that more than 40,000 waterbirds use the lakes in winter, and describes the area as internationally significant as a wintering area for waterbirds. To understand what you are looking at, start with birdwatching in Prespa. Dress for the cold, and follow the rules that protect the birds.
Why there is a footbridge to Agios Achilleios
On Agios Achilleios, an island in the lake, the floating footbridge has a winter story. According to the Municipality of Prespes tourism portal, before the bridge was built the young students who lived on the island had to cross the icy and very dangerous surface of the lake. The bridge now serves mainly pedestrians and cyclists. The island has its place in things to do in Prespa.
