Byzantine heritage in Prespa

Byzantine heritage in Prespa runs from about the end of the 10th century to the 18th. Three places stand out: the island of Agios Achilleios in Lesser Prespa, the hermitages near Psarades on Greater Prespa, and the church of Agios Germanos. The church of Agios Germanos dates from the beginning of the 11th century and is dedicated to Germanos I, Patriarch of Constantinople. It has painted decoration from three periods, the latest from 1743, and in 1882 a larger basilica was added against its western wall. It welcomes visitors and follows the church calendar. The island of Agios Achilleios

According to religiousgreece.gr, the church of Saint Achilleios was built in the 980s by Samuel, the Tsar of the Bulgarians, to house the relic of Saint Achilleios. The Municipality of Prespes tourism portal describes a three-aisled, wood-roofed basilica, says Samuel made Prespa the seat of his kingdom, and says he carried the relics from Larissa in 983 or 986. Remains of wall paintings of the 11th and 12th centuries survive, according to religiousgreece.gr, and some fragments are in the Archaeological Museum of Florina.

On the same island, the portal describes the remains of a small, dome-covered basilica of the Twelve Apostles, probably of the 11th or 12th century, and the monastery of Panagia Porphyra. Its murals date from 1524, the mid-16th century and, in the sanctuary and on the southern wall, 1741. The Panagia Vrefokratousa above the entrance is especially notable, the portal says, and her purple clothing gave the convent its name. The festival of Panagia Porphyra is held around 21 November.

To reach the island, read things to do in Prespa: a floating footbridge or a boat.

The hermitages near Psarades

The tourism portal says that from Psarades you can visit by boat the hermitages of Panagia Eleousa, the Ascension and the Transfiguration on the shores of Greater Prespa. The Transfiguration hermitage sits in a shallow cavern over a small beach, and the portal dates it to the 13th century, with some reservations. The hermitage of Agios Athanasios is described as recently discovered: known to locals, it has only lately been restored and its access improved, and it is easily reached on foot from Psarades. Only a few elements of its masonry and painted decoration survive.

Village churches

In Psarades, the church of the Assumption is said to have been built by craftsmen from Korytsa in 1903, according to tradition, and its feast is on 15 August.
